Obituary

Susan B. Micheel, 61 of Vero Beach, FL passed away December 18, 2025.

Susan was born in Dayton, Ohio, and moved with her parents to Vero Beach about 50 years ago. She had one sister, Gabriel, who passed away from breast cancer many years ago when Susan was likely in her 30s. The loss of her sister was devastating for Susan and deeply affected her life.

Susan's mother, Maria, passed away approximately six years ago. Her father, Lutz, an electrical engineer, currently resides in a nursing home in Vero Beach and is not doing well.

Susan was described by those who knew her best as somewhat shy, yet at the same time very happy, outgoing, and vivacious. She loved being around people and had a natural ability to make friends easily. One of her lifelong friends, Mary Kelly of Chicago, who knew Susan for more than 50 years, recalled that they went to school together and remained close throughout their lives.

Although Susan studied computer science in college at her father's encouragement, she found true fulfillment when her career led her to work with individuals affected by Alzheimer's disease and their families. In this role, she became a strong and effective educator, known for her compassionate and personal approach. Susan genuinely loved this work, excelled at it, and was deeply appreciated by those she served.

Susan had a love for animals and shared her life with both dogs and cats. She remained very active, enjoying jazz music, traveling, and even skydiving. She was also politically engaged and cared deeply about the world around her.

Susan struggled with alcoholism for approximately 30 years but achieved sobriety over the last 15 years of her life. It is believed that the loss of her sister may have contributed to the beginning of this struggle. Raised Catholic, Susan did not practice regularly, but her faith was important to her. She was devoted to Alcoholics Anonymous, often spoke openly about her faith, and enjoyed reading and discussing Bible passages with others. Through AA and other groups, Susan brought many people together, creating lasting friendships among those she introduced.

Though Susan faced many challenges throughout her life, she touched and impacted a great number of people. She was deeply loved, and she returned that love generously. Her warmth, resilience, and compassion will be remembered by all who knew her.

A Celebration of Life honoring Susan will be held on Sunday, January 4, from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. at the ELC Lagoon Gallery. All who love Susan are invited to attend and share in remembering her life.

Arrangements are under the direction of Cox-Gifford Seawinds Funeral Home.
