Thomas John Herbst, 65, died of natural causes on June 26, 2025 at his home in Vero Beach, Florida.

Tom was born in Hibbing, MN to Elaine and George Herbst on April 14, 1960.  He graduated from Hibbing High School in 1978, where he participated in golf and hockey.  He went to UMD and entered the Marine Corps. After an honorable discharge, he finished a business degree at UMD. He stayed in Duluth while he worked for BNSF railroad. Tom lived in Duluth for over 30 years. He had good friends with whom he motorcycled and golfed with at Nemadji.

Tom had a good sense of humor. He loved a good story, especially his brother Dave's. He stayed in touch with many people and liked to catch up over the phone. He was good friends with his siblings and his ex-wife Cheri and her adult children.

When he retired, he moved to Vero Beach, Florida. He had fun exploring, going to the ocean,  and trying different golf courses in the area. Golf was an important pastime throughout Tom's life. He would recall each stroke he made and would tell us over the phone about each hole. As a member of the AA community, Tom found it meaningful sponsoring, encouraging other members, and volunteering at the central office. He also greatly enjoyed watching hockey.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Don Hilligoss.  Tom is survived by his brother Dave (Terri) Herbst and sister Cindy Hilligoss.  Also by his nephews and nieces, Brendan Herbst, Hillary (Ian) Ross, Sarah (Andrew) Hilligoss-Moe, and Charles (Grace) Hilligoss.

A burial will be held at Fort Snelling on August 19 at 11 am
