Virginia Glenn Barfield McClure, born May 21, 1927 in Henning, Tennessee to George Frederick Barfield and Mary Louise Johnson Barfield. She died October 20th at Atlantic Healthcare at the age of 82. A sister, Louise Black, predeceased her in 1973. Survived by two children, Suzanne McClure (Robert) Wilk and William H. McClure, Jr. Married William H. McClure May 30, 1947. Glenn graduated from Ripley (TN) High School and attended Murray State University in 1946. She later became secretary to the business manager of the university. She moved to Danville, VA in 1948 and had a civil service job with the U.S. Government. Bill and Glenn moved to Dyersburg, Tennessee in 1948 where Glenn was a full time mother to her two children. The family moved to Vero Beach in July 1956. Glenn worked as a secretary at VBHS from 1957-1959. She was secretary to the Indian River County Superintendent of Schools from 1960-1968 and IRC School Board Secretary from 1969-1979, retiring in January 1979. Glenn and Bill moved to Greenville, SC in 1980. Glenn was secretary to the business manager of Furman University, retiring in 1986. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a former member of the Official Board of the Church, and the Naomi Circle. Glenn was also a member of Golden Girls, a group of retired School Board employees. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames, the Florida Retired Educators Association, and an honorary member of Delta Kappa Gamma. In addition to her spouse and children, Glenn is survived by cousins Ann Owen of Covington, TN, Caroline Hanson of Henning, TN, Martha Jean Luce of Conoga Park, CA, niece Barbara Waters of Atlanta, GA, nephews Steve Black of Memphis, TN, Andrew McClure of CO and Doug McClure of MO, brothers-in-law Major James H. McClure of Dyersburg, TN and Dr. And Mrs. Jere P. McClure of Littleton, CO. Glenn loved her family, her friends, and her Yorkie, Molly. She will be deeply missed.
Services: A funeral service will be held Friday, October 23, 2009 at 2:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Dr. Charles Lever presiding, Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2009 from 5-7 PM at the Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home Chapel in Vero Beach.
