Wallace Cromwell "Crom" Palmer, III, 91, died March 3,2008, at Indian River Memorial Hospital. He was born in Olean, New York on September 6, 1916, but spent his childhood in Cebu City, the Philippines, where he attended Brent School, Baguio, Colegio De San Carlos, and the University of the Philippines, Cebu. Returning to the United States, he attended Indiana University where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. In 1937, he joined Standard Oil where he was assigned to Hong Kong; Wuchow, Kwangsi Province; Kwangchowan; French Indo China (Phnom Penh, Hanoi, Saigon). Still with Standard Oil, he worked the "Burma Road" supplying fuel to the Flying Tigers. He enlisted in the Navy during WWII where he was called to join the U.S. Navy School of Military Government at Columbia University graduating in 1943. He served in the Pacific theatre as Military Government Officer of the Marianas Islands, Island of Tinian. After the war, he joined a family business, Reel-Blue Lumber, Co. and then joined Getz Bros. & Co., international merchants and steamship agents, San Francisco, CA. He served as Manager of the Jakarta (Indonesia) office; General Manager for the Philippines and later for Japan, Okinawa, and Korea. He was eventually transferred to San Francisco as Vice President in charge of the North Pacific area. Crom moved with his wife, Dorothy and family, to Vero Beach, Florida, in 1967 from Menlo Park, California. While in Vero Beach, he worked as a realtor with Hoyt C. Murphy Realtors, Inc. His loving wife of 60 years, Dorothy Rebecca Reel Palmer, preceded Crom in death in 2003. Crom is survived by his children: Pamela Palmer Kramlich (C. Richard) of San Francisco, CA, Wallace C. Palmer, IV (Frances) of Weston, CT, and Cynthia Palmer Rountree of Vero Beach; his grandchildren: Daphne Rebecca Palmer, Cooper Samuel Palmer, Ethan Cromwell Palmer of Weston, CT; and, Julian Hertel Rountree, III of Vero Beach; and his sister, Beverly Palmer Schmahl of Galveston, TX. Crom resided at Somerset House, Oak Harbor, for over 7 years, and the family wishes to thank the residents and staff for their care and supportive friendship. A celebration of Crom Plamers life will be scheduled for a future date.
