Obit: William A. Cleary, Jr.
William A. Cleary, Jr., 83, of Vero Beach, FL died Saturday, October 22, 2011 at the Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach.
Mr. Cleary was born May 19, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY and moved to Vero Beach 21 years ago from Rockville, MD.
He received his BS in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering in 1951 at Webb Institute and also was a graduate of the US Naval War College in Newport, RI Class of 1952 School of Command and Staff. He served in the US Navy during the Korean War and held the rank of Captain, USNR with the position of qualified Ship Docking Officer, Diving and Salvage Officer, Ship Salvage Operations. He was a Professional Engineer USA, Florida Mechanical Engineer, Chartered Engineer, UK Naval Architect and European Engineer ED Naval Architect. He had been employed as Chief of the Naval Architecture Branch, Office of Merchant Marine Safety and Marine and Environmental Protection USCG Headquarters in Washington, DC from 1968-1987; Navy Engineering duty officer, ship repair, design, salvage, training of diving and salvage reservists from 1951-1981, and Inspector General (NavySea) from 1981-1985. In 1989 he came to Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, FL where he taught as an adjunct professor on topics including ship safety (general and specific regulatory approaches), ship seaway interaction, and liability in new ship systems.
Survivors include his spouse, three children, several brothers and sisters, and numerous grandchildren.

Service: The family will receive friends 4-7 PM, Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at the Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home in Vero Beach with a prayer service at 6:30 PM. Mass will be celebrated 10 AM, Thursday, October 27, 2011 at St. Helen Catholic Church in Vero Beach. Interment will follow at Crestlawn Cemetery in Vero Beach.
