William Oscar Harmon, 92, of Vero Beach, Fl. passed peacefully in his sleep on Friday, October 30th, 2020 due to natural causes.

William was born to the late Henry and Armel Riffe Harmon on December 15, 1927 in Pilgrim, Ky. William married the late Edna Jude Harmon in 1951 and they lived in Martin County, Ky, before retiring to Vero Beach, Fl in 1981.

William was a proud member of the United States Army Air Corps, now known as the United States Air Force. During this time, he traveled around the world while proudly serving his country as a Platoon Leader and after numerous promotions; he obtained the rank of Sergeant. While stationed in Nagoya, Japan he worked as the Chief Clerk of the Civilian Personnel Office for the Headquarters of the 5th Air Force Division for over 2 years. Being awarded the World War II Victory Ribbon Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal Japan and the Good Conduct Medal were some of his greatest achievements. Before enlisting in the military, he worked for the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier. After returning home from Japan, he was employed in the coal mining industry until retirement.

He was an accomplished outdoorsman who thoroughly enjoyed fishing, hunting and boating. Traveling was a favorite pastime as he always saw the beauty in the places he visited. Some of his favorite trips included Las Vegas, NV and countless cruises. He loved exercising his mind and was an avid reader who could always be found enjoying a good book, working a crossword puzzle or playing one of his favorite games of chess or cards.

Always believing community involvement was important, he was a member of many different organizations including the Freemasonry where he served as a Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, the United Mine Workers of America, the American Legion Association and he volunteered regularly at Mustard Seed Ministries. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Vero Beach .

William was a generous man, a trait instilled in him by his cherished grandmother, Olga Roach Riffe. He was always the first to lend a helping hand to those in need and consistently put the needs of others before his own. William was friendly to all and never met a stranger.

William is survived by his daughter, Shirley Harmon Helton (Danny) of Vero Beach, FL; granddaughters Jessica Helton McGuigan and Jaime Helton Rhing; beloved great-grandsons Alex, Luke, Charlie, Nick; Sister Mae Harmon Fraley; and innumerable family and friends.

He is predeceased by his wife Edna Jude Harmon; son Duane E. Harmon; and grandson William Zachary Harmon.

William will be interred on December 1, 2020 at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery for Veterans with the United States Air Force Honor Guard administering a full military ceremony in tribute of his service to his country.
