William Bill Kelemen's Obituary
William (Bill) Kelemen, 96, World War II Veteran, passed away Saturday, November 27, 2010, with his loving wife Ruth by his side. Bill was born in New York City, NY on August 31, 1914.
He was the third oldest child of the late Joseph and Julia Kelemen. Other than his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles, Joseph and sister Elizabeth. He is survived by his wife Ruth Kelemen, of Vero Beach, FL; sister, Julia Esther DiMare and brother-in-law, Carmine, of Port Jefferson, NY, nephew, Carl DiMare, of Marietta, GA, niece, Liana and Bill Hewett, of Mansfield, MA, niece, Lyn and Peter Stalter, of Chester, NY, nephews, Joseph and Dale Kelemen, of Suffern, NY, nephew, Dennis and Sabina Kelemen, of Thiells, NY, nephew, Billy Kelemen and Karen Wachsman, of Haverstraw, NY, nephew, Gilbert Kelemen, of Piermont, NY, stepchildren, Denise and Cary Kean, of Norcross, GA, Hank and Gigi Oset, of Jensen Beach, FL and Danny Oset of Ocoee, FL. He is also survived by numerous grand, great and great-great nieces and nephews.
During the 1930's, Bill served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Montana, Tennessee and Vermont. In 1940 he joined the Army and served faithfully with the First Infantry Combat Engineers Division during WWII where he participated in three D Day invasions, North Africa, Sicily and Normandy. His unit was the first to enter Germany. After the war he worked as a Brakeman for the N.Y. Central Railroad. Upon his retirement in 1975, he moved to FL. where he spent the next 35 years. In 1998, he met the love of his life Ruth and they spent the next 12 years together enjoying life. Bill was a loving husband, brother, uncle and friend to all.
The family will receive friends 4-7 PM, Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home in Vero Beach. Mass will be celebrated 10am Thursday, December 2, 2010 at St. Helen Catholic Church in Vero Beach. Interment will be at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the VNA / Hospice Foundation,1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960 or the American Legion Post 39, 1535 Old Dixie Hwy, Vero Beach, FL 32960.
