Obit: William B. McKallip
William (Bill) McKallip, 85, of Vero Beach, FL died Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach.
Bill was born in Leechburg, PA; but spent most of his youth in Hamburg, NY. In 1943, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he held the position of a Gunner aboard a B29, flyng 25 missions over Japan.
After completing his education at Buffalo University, Bill met and married his wife, Phyllis Vant. They settled in East Hampton, NY, where Bill was a High School Teacher of Business Courses. Summers were spent life guarding, and serving for 25 years as the Red Cross Swimming Instructor for the town of East Hampton. In 1981, upon retirement, the couple and their daughter, Susan, became part-time residents of Vero Beach, FL.
Bills passions included antique cars, golf (Vista Meadows Golf Club), tennis (Timber Ridge) and Dodgetown where his seat behind the dugout was treasured for over 25 years. He was also a die-hard fan of the Vero Beach Football Team.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Phyllis; daughter, Susan Joy McKallip; and son, Scott Andrew McKallip.
He was preceded in death by his infant son, William McKallip Jr.; and by his siblings: Robert McKallip, Clara McKallip; and Wayne McKallip who died two days before William.
